PMO Chief Announces Significant Port Service Fee Discounts to Support Private Sector

pmo h The head of the Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) has announced substantial discounts on port service fees aimed at supporting the private sector and preventing workforce layoffs, emphasizing that no dismissals have occurred in this sector to date.

Mohammad Shakibi-Nasab, Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development and Managing Director of the Ports and Maritime Organization, stated in an interview with the economic correspondent of ILNA that the organization has implemented targeted support measures for the private sector and port workers.

Shakibi-Nasab noted that the PMO, operating as a revenue-expenditure organization, does not rely on the government's general budget. Instead, a significant portion of its costs is financed through ship traffic and the cargo loaded and unloaded at ports.

"On the expenditure side, we have made every possible effort to support the private sector through discounts and targeted assistance, particularly with the aim of preventing workforce reductions and avoiding social consequences for the hardworking and vulnerable segment of society — namely, port workers," he added.

The Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development emphasized: "Fortunately, to date, we have had no dismissals in the port sector. Through smart management, we have strived to ensure that none of the companies operating in this field are compelled to downsize their workforce."

Referring to the exceptional circumstances arising from recent conflicts, the PMO Managing Director further highlighted that appropriate approvals have been secured for waiving demurrage fees — charges incurred for delays in unloading — on containers currently held at the country's ports. While noting that a portion of these costs pertains to shipping companies and container owners, he affirmed that the PMO has extended full cooperation and assistance to the private sector regarding port-related expenses.
