Iran, Azerbaijan to build a road bridge over Astarachay River

پل مرزی آستاراچای Iran and Azerbaijan are to build road bridge over Astarachay River and complete Astara rail freight terminal.

Tehran, Dec 12 (MRUD) – Kheyrollah Khademi, the Deputy Minister and CEO of Iran's Construction and Development of Transportation Infrastructures Company, along with Azerbaijan delegation pay a visit to the road bridge construction project over Astarachay River and Astara rail freight terminal at the border on 7 December.

The two sides discussed and agreed initial details to launch construction of a road bridge over Astarachay River which would increase transport capacity.

To this end, a special task force was previously set to be formed to address the details including choosing contractor and financing so that the implementation agreement would be ready for the next ministerial meeting in Azerbaijan.

Astarachay River separates Astara in Iran from its namesake town in Azerbaijan.

“The bridge will be 97 meters long and 32 meters wide and will be built in four lanes, and its credit will be provided jointly by the governments of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan,” Kheyrollah Khademi explained after a joint meeting of the officials of the two countries in Astara on Tuesday.

The construction costs estimate to 5 million Euros.

Previously Iran and Azerbaijan have reached an agreement to construct a road bridge on the Astarachay River on their border. The MoU to jointly finance and construct the bridge on Astarachay River was signed in June 2021 between Iran’s Transport Minister, Mohammad Eslami, and Azerbaijan’s Deputy Prime Minister, Shahin Mustafayev, in Baku.
