Iran and the CIS Countries promote transit cooperation

Tehran, August 3 (MRUD NEWS)—Iran Ministry of Transport and Urban Development hosted the Head of the Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Council of Road Workers of the CIS countries, Buri Karimov, yesterday on August 2. The two sides exchanged views on the potentials and capabilities in transport and transit. 
Iran Minister of Transport and Urban Development, Rostam Ghasemi, proposed formation of joint or multilateral consortia that ensure interests of Iran and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). 
Upon Karimov's proposal regarding the participation of Iranian companies in the road constructions projects of the commonwealth nations, the Minister pointed to the developments and potentials of technical and engineering companies of Iran despite harsh sanctions. 
Additionally, Iran Deputy Transport Minister, Shahriyar Afandizadeh, highlighted Iran's geographical position along North-South and East-West transport Corridors and expressed Iran's willingness to provide the CIS countries with access to the high seas through the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. 
Iran economic interactions with CIS countries have recently been developed and subsequently transport and transit cooperation turned into the top priorities of Iran for joint regional interests. 
Noteworthy, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was founded in 1991 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. At present the CIS countries include Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
