Tehran, Ankara targeted 1 million tons rail freight transit in 2024

صالحی During the meeting of Iran and Turkey railway officials in Ankara, the target of one million tons rail freight transit was announced by the managing director of Iran Railways.

Tehran, December 2 (MRUD NEWS)—The managing director of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways, Miad Salehi, informed of targeting one million tons rail freight transit between Tehran and Ankara in the next year.

Miad Salehi, Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development and Managing Director of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways, met with Hasan Pezük, Director General of the Turkish State Railways (TCDD), Ufuk Yalçın, General Manager and Chairman of Turkey’s Railways Company in Ankara and informed of the agreement for targeting of one million tons rail freight transit between Tehran and Ankara for the upcoming year.

The target is to be met by transit of 200 railway wagons per day through Razi Border, Salehi said.

Turkey would embark on reconstructing its rail network infrastructures and also remove the problems caused by the decline in water level in Turkey’s Lake Van, added Salehi.

He also expressed hope that the capacity of railway wagon transit from Lake Van would reach its maximum by reconstructing, renovating and upgrading the wharf and the ships carrying the wagons.

The agreements in this meeting would ease freight transit to Europe from Turkey as the gateway to Europe. Thus, as per previous agreements, the freight can be transited from China-Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Turkey towards Europe.

In the meeting, the two sides also discussed construction of the new railway from Marand and Cheshmeh Soraya to Igdir and Kars which can significantly augment rail transit between Iran and Turkey.
