Tehran, September 4 (MRUD NEWS)—The commemoration ceremony of the World Maritime Day 2022 was held in Iran Port and Maritime Organization (PMO) on September 3 with presence of Iran Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Rostam Ghasemi, Ali-Akbar Safaei, the new managing director of Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO), Admiral Shahram Irani, Commander of Islamic Republic of Iran's Navy, members of the Parliament's construction commission, and senior officials of Iran's maritime bodies.
Safaei pointed to the 17th position of Iran among the countries with the largest shipping fleet, and said Iran has 13000 registered ships and 120,000 seafarers.
Iran has had 26000 billion toman infrastructural projects in the maritime sector and the loading and unloading of the freights through the maritime sector had been 107 million tons, the managing-director of PMO pointed out.
In passenger transfer, 7.5 million people were transferred through the maritime sector, Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) informed.
The capacity of Iran marine fleet is 14 million tons while the real capacity is more than 30 million tons because some fleets are flagged in a country other than Iran due to sanctions.
Admiral Shahram Irani, Commander of Islamic Republic of Iran's Navy, proposed for the maritime economy which would be the key to the country's economy.
The theme for World Maritime Day 2022 was 'New technologies for greener shipping' reflecting the need to support a “green transition of the maritime sector into a sustainable future while leaving no one behind”.
Many maritime organizations and unions hold special events and activities to celebrate this day.
