According to Seyyed-Zahedin Cheshmeh-Khavar, Director General of the Ilam Road Maintenance and Transportation Department, more than 1,150 kilometers of major roadways leading to the Mehran border have been resurfaced over the past three years. These include the Hamil–Ilam–Mehran, Islamabad–Qalajeh–Ilam–Mehran, Andimeshk–Dehloran–Mehran, and Darehshahr–Ilam routes.
Traffic Bottlenecks Resolved
Cheshmeh-Khavar noted that nearly 12 kilometers of new roadways and two 45-meter bridge spans were constructed between 2022 and 2024, effectively eliminating a 17-kilometer traffic bottleneck that had previously hindered movement on the Ilam–Mehran route.
A 370 billion IRR contract has also been signed to install composite information and enforcement signage, with more than 80,000 signs already deployed along the region’s arterial roads.
Enhanced Safety and Monitoring
To improve traffic safety, 100 kilometers of New Jersey-style concrete barriers have been installed, with an additional 20 kilometers under development. Annual road markings have been carried out across 3,000 kilometers of roads leading to Mehran.
The road network has also seen a boost in intelligent monitoring systems. Cheshmeh-Khavar stated that 36 automated violation-recording cameras are operational, while 11 more are being installed. An additional 16 CCTV units will soon be added to enhance surveillance coverage.
Expanded Facilities for Pilgrims
To provide greater comfort for Arbaeen pilgrims, Cheshmeh-Khavar reported that 52,000 square meters of shading structures have been deployed. This includes 5,000 square meters of permanent awnings and 20,000 square meters of temporary covers being added this year.
He also noted that 14 kilometers of fogging systems and 270 jet fans were installed in 2024 to improve air circulation and road conditions. An additional 10 kilometers of fogging systems and 100 jet fans are being deployed ahead of the 2025 pilgrimage.
Upgrades at Mehran Border and Barkat Terminal
The Mehran border area has been enhanced with 12,000 square meters of landscaping, full asphalting, and drainage projects. Similar infrastructure upgrades have been implemented at the Shahid Raisi (Barkat) passenger terminal, including expanded medical facilities and rest areas for drivers.
Cheshmeh-Khavar also highlighted the near-completion of a new emergency service road designed to provide direct access for logistical and emergency response teams.
Preparedness for Arbaeen Season
"All these developments reflect our full readiness to ensure a safe, efficient, and dignified travel experience for millions of Arbaeen pilgrims," Cheshmeh-Khavar emphasized
